How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. genuine audi key replacement uk uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins, and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. 5. Tachometer

There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a common component across the Audi 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU.
